Winter is the season which Avoriaz is most well known for. It is certainly the busiest season of the year as visitors come from all over the world to enjoy the snow in one of the most snowsure resorts in the Alps.

Snow records

In the 2012-2013 winter season Avoriaz boasted the highest snowfall in the whole of Europe, with 11.8 metres of snow falling at resort level (1800 metres). This was the second highest snowfall for a winter season ever. The average snowfall for a winter season in Avoriaz is around eight metres, still an impressive amount!

Cold weather in winter

As the temperature drops throughout October and November, by the end of November snow will often be settling, especially on the higher slopes of Arare and Fornet but also often on lower areas. There are usually a few early snowfalls in October/early November, but these often melt as the temperature warms up. By early December it will usually be cold enough for the snow to begin settling for winter throughout the ski area and the snow cannons might be turned on in order to get the pistes ready for the opening weekend, which is usually early December. The average temperature varies throughout winter from approximately -3 degrees to 6 degrees in April, towards the end of winter. This is just an average though and it is a good idea to be prepared for all possible conditions. The temperature can drop as low as -30 and the wind chill can make it seem even colder. When it gets this cold hypothermia and frostbite are very real risks so anyone heading out in these conditions should layer their clothes appropriately and wrap up. Snow storms can also come in quickly so it is important to check the forecast and be ready for a sudden change in conditions.

At the other end of the scale, by the end of the season there can be very warm and sunny days. When conditions get like that it's a good idea to cover up skin and wear sunscreen to avoid burning, as the sun reflects off the snow and sunburn can be quite severe. Be prepared for any change in the temperature, as it is not a pleasant experience to go out in just a hoody if the temperature suddenly drops.

Overall the cold winters and high precipitation make Avoriaz an ideal destination for fans of winter sports.
