The history of the town of Avoriaz has been punctuated by the special events that have been put on to bring publicity to the town or to increase visitor numbers.

The Film Festival

Starting in 1973 the Film Festival ìFantastiqueî has showcased the films of some of the top directors in the world. These have included, over the years, Brian De Palma, David Cronenburg, David Lynch, Steven Spielberg, George Miller and Luc Besson. The last edition of the festival was in 1993. Some notable films to have won the prize in the past include Carrie, Elephant Man, Terminator, Mad Max 2 and Blue Velvet. The Blue Velvet ski run which opened in December 2015 was named to commemorate the film of the same name.

FIS Races

Over the years Avoriaz has hosted a number of FIS events. It is ideally suited for these as it is known as one of the most snow sure resorts in the Alps. These race events bring publicity and visitors to the town, increasing its profile throughout the world of skiing, and shows a commitment to building the best possible areas for skiing.

Tour De France

The hugely popular Tour De France has visited Avoriaz on numerous occasions in its recent history. The steep winding roads leading to the village are the perfect challenge for the best riders in the world, and the dramatic backdrop of the surrounding mountains provides a stunning setting. Broadcast worldwide it is a great advertisement for the village. The Tour De France last cameto Avoriaz in 2010 when it hosted the 8th stage of the Tour.

Music Festivals

In 2016 the Snowboxx music festival moved to Avoriaz. The festival features world famous music acts, as well as other events on and off the slopes and brings in approximately 3,000 visitors. The Transition festival, run by the same people as Snowbombing, is a similar festival at the start of the winter. Rock The Pistes is a festival that runs throughout the Portes Du Soleil, with Avoriaz just one of the venues. It features free concerts on the slopes.

Passportes Du Soleil

In Summer the Passportes Du Soleil event kicks off the mountain bike season for Avoriaz. 2016 was the 13th year for the event. It is an event that involves attempting to cover 80km in one dayon a bike, crossing the border from France to Switzerland and incorporating 15 lifts throughout the area.
