Les Gets is unique in the Portes Du Soleil in that it could be argued that it is even more well known for its summer season and the mountain biking trails there than it is for winter. However, of all the seasons in Les Gets winter still brings the most visitors. The tree lined mountains above the village offer something different in all seasons.

When the first snows start falling

Snow usually starts falling in October. Sometimes it doesnít begin till November but it is generally around this time. It might not initially settle as the average temperature will probably still be too high.

The temperature drops

From late November the temperature will begin to drop significantly. Usually snow will begin to settle. The lifts will be scheduled to open around mid December. As long as the temperature remains low snow canons will be used to top up the snow and get a good base on the pistes.

Except for the higher slopes Les Gets is generally quite sheltered so is not subjected to high winds in the way that Avoriaz might be.The temperature can vary quite a lot, with the temperature dropping well below zero at times in winter but also becoming much warmer towards the end of the winter as it gets closer to spring time.

Skiing and snowboarding

The mountains around Les Gets are not as high as Avoriaz and access to Morzine (in order to reach the higher slopes of Avoriaz) can take some time (unless you have a car), as you must go over towards the Pleney area of Morzine and then go across town to head up Super Morzine or get a bus to Prodains, but there is still plenty on offer on the slopes of Les Gets. Les Gets is very much a family resort, with plenty of relaxed tree line skiing on offer. Some of the higher slopes are more challenging but in general blues dominate.

When is the winter season?

Winter begins around the start of December around the time that the lifts open. By late March, with the temperature increasing and the snow melting it can be said that winter is coming to an end. There is still skiing beyond this time but there is definitely a change in the air as the town gets ready for the new season.
