Les Gets' Geographical location has contributed to the success that it has enjoyed as a holiday destination over the years.

What's Around

Although it is in the mountains, Les Gets is not an isolated mountain town. Firstly, it is located in close proximity to Morzine and Avoriaz, two of the other resorts that make up the Portes Du Soleil ski area. It is also located relatively close to a number of large towns with excellent transport inks. The most obvious of these is Geneva, located approximately sixty kilometres away. Geneva has an airport with regular flights arriving throughout the year. The proximity of an airport means that Les Gets is far more convenient than many other ski resorts. There are also train stations at Cluses and Thonon with regular services to Lyon and Paris. The largest town in the Haute Savoie - Annecy - is also close by.

Population

Part of the charm of a place like Les Gets is that it is a small village with a rustic feel. This is reflected in the fact that the town has a low permanent population of about thirteen hundred residents. The population has not fluctuated greatly since the first census back in 1793. However, there are approximately fifteen thousand tourist beds in town and every winter and summer a large number of seasonal workers come to town. Therefore the village has very quiet months during interseason but gets considerably busier during the peak tourists seasons of winter and summer.

Geopark Du Chablais

Stretching from the shores of lake Geneva all the way to Avoriaz, the Geopark Du Chablais is a testament to the geological importance of the area. It also pays homage to the importance of manĂs relationship with nature in the area, working with nature rather than trying to make it work for him. The relationship of man to nature can be seen all around the area, and there are specific sites giving information about the site as well as some details about the Geopark project. The Geoparks are a UNESCO organised, world wide project to recognise and conserve areas of geological importance as well as to help educate people about them.
